The Myrtaceae or myrtle family contains as many as 3000 species in 130-150 genera. All species are woody and have floral parts in fours or fives. They range throughout the world's tropical and subtropical regions and make up a large part of the tree and shrub population of Australia.  The evergreen leaves are simple, and mostly opposite and entire- margined. Most species have numerous brightly colored stamens, leaves having essential oils and strongly-scented, and fruits typically either capsules or fleshy berries. Some of the more well-known members of the family are Eucalyptus, allspice, Surinam cherry, the bottlebrushes, guavas and cloves. In areas where these species are native, there are parasites which have evolved to attack the leaves, but in the U.S which is outside the natural range of the Myrtaceae, cultivated plants are generally pest-free.
