WHITEWATER CANYON
APRIL 2009
PART TWO PAGE ONE
Photographs by Michael Charters

One photo gallery was clearly not enough for April in Whitewater Canyon, and subsequent visits keep turning up more and more species. Most of the photos in this gallery were taken either in the wash area below the Reserve, or along a section of the Pacific Crest Trail that zigzags up out of the Canyon on the west side of the Reserve. I will make at least one more trip there this month and try to go farther along the PCT as it heads north on the west side of the wash. There are still many species that have been vouchered from Whitewater Canyon that I haven't found yet. And my thanks again to those people who suggested corrections on identifications for the previous gallery pages. For those who didn't see the previous Whitewater Canyon galleries, Whitewater Canyon is north of Interstate 10 just where you begin to see the wind machines in San Gorgonio Pass, a couple of miles west of where the 62 goes off to Joshua Tree. An asterisk next to the common name indicates a non-native taxon, and a tilde (~) indicates an uncertain identification. This photo gallery includes a page of species that are unidentified in hopes that the sharp eyes and keen minds of viewers will be able to suggest an identification. These are mostly shrubby species that will be in bloom later in the season.
