TRIUNFO CREEK/WESTLAKE VISTA PARKS, SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINS
MAY 2009 PAGE ONE
Photographs by Michael Charters
I visited Triunfo Creek Park and Westlake Vista Parks to look for and photograph the so-called purple western morning glory, Calystegia purpurata, which is perhaps better named Pacific false bindweed or smooth western morning glory because the ones in our area are as white as our other morning glories and distinguishable from them only by two small bractlets positioned beneath the calyx. I was also eager to see the endangered Lyon's pentachaeta again after only one other visit to this area many years ago. Triunfo Creek Park is located near the terminus of Lindero Canyon Road where you turn left onto Triunfo Canyon Road, and is immediately adjacent to Westlake Vista Park. An upside-down V next to the common name indicates a species that was new to me when I photographed it on this field trip, and an asterisk indicates a non-native taxon. |
