SAN GABRIEL MOUNTAINS MID-ELEVATION SUMMER FLORA

This photo gallery displays pictures which were taken at two locations on one of Jane Strong's mountain plant walks, at several stops along the Angeles Crest Highway, at several stops along Santa Clara Divide Road, and on three subsequent trips along the ACH four days later. For the purposes of this gallery, I have somewhat arbitrarily defined "mid-elevation" as roughly between 6,000' and 8,000', so it includes pretty much anything along the Angeles Crest Highway and its immediate environs between Chilao and Wrightwood. Stops that I made included Chilao, Santa Clara Divide Road, Mt. Hillyer, the dry north-facing slope above Buckhorn, Cortelyou Spring, Winston Spring, the excellent snow melt gully at MM 67.70, Snow Canyon at MM 71.98, Lightning Ridge, Big Pines Meadow and East Table Mt. Road. The San Gabriels are by and large pretty dry right now, but there are still places where little streams have flowed recently, springs, and snow melt gullies where moisture has encouraged a nice if localized bloom. An asterisk next to the common name indicates a non-native taxon. I want to take this opportunity to again thank several people who have been unfailingly generous with their advice and corrections on species identifications: Jane Strong, Tom Chester, Jay Sullivan and Jeff Greenhouse for plants, and Bob Allen and Hartmut Wisch for butterflies, bees and other creepy-crawlies. I am lucky to know them and proud to consider them my friends, and I hereby acknowledge their contributions to my photo galleries. There are many others whose expertise I have also benefitted from, and whose company I have gladly shared, and I am sincerely grateful to them all.
