JEPSON WORKSHOP: SAN DIEGO COUNTY APRIL 2007 PAGE ONE |
Photographs by Michael Charters |
These photos are from a Jepson workshop I attended in 2007 that was supposed to be for eastern San Diego and Imperial Counties which I was really looking forward to because the Algodones Dunes area of Imperial County is such a great place to botanize. Unfortunately it was not to be. I chose the picture above because it represents my idea of much of the area we were supposed to visit, and which we didn't because our trip leader, Jon Rebman, who had scouted the area said there wasn't anything there. That's the way it is sometimes on Jepson workshops which have to be planned a year in advance. But Jon Rebman is as knowledgeable as anyone about the flora of San Diego County, and he adjusted the itinerary. We stayed as planned at Bow Willow Campground which is the southernmost campground in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, and botanized up into Anza-Borrego along the S-2 and in the Mountain Springs Grade vicinity. We spent one whole day at Horsethief Canyon between Alpine and Pine Valley south of I-8 in the Pine Creek Wilderness area of the Cleveland National Forest,
and we visited other locations and got to see many desert and non-desert species. It wasn't the workshop we had anticipated but nevertheless we saw a lot of plants and a good time was had by all. After the workshop I visited the Crucifixion Thorn Natural Area on my own. This photo gallery isn't the most floriferous I've ever done by far, but you work with what you have. |
