PACIFIC CREST TRAIL FROM MILL CREEK SUMMIT TO
PACIFICO MOUNTAIN, SAN GABRIEL MOUNTAINS

Thanks to Jane Tirrell for suggesting this area. It was heavily burned over in the Station Fire of 2009 and there is a great deal of resprouting and signs of new growth everywhere. I didn't quite get to the 7124' summit of Pacifico Mountain, but I intend to next time. This area is on the north-facing slope of the range, so it shares much in common with the Mojave Desert which it overlooks. The views from all along the trail are simply spectacular although the landscape is burned almost all the way to the summit. It is a beautiful, well-graded and well-maintained trail and it was a magnificent day, sunny and 48° when I began and in the low 70's when I got back to the car at 5 o'clock. I should point out that as I concentrate almost exclusively on the San Gabriels, these photo galleries will exhibit a good deal of repetition or duplication of species, but I consider them as photographic records of what I saw along the trails or in each particular area. My next outings will be Fish Canyon with Dan Simpson and the section of the Pacific Crest Trail from Alder Saddle to Pacifico Mountain. As always, the symbol ^ indicates a taxon that was new to me when I photographed it on this field trip and an asterisk denotes a non-native species. In some cases, the identifications displayed here are based on what has been vouchered around the Pacifico Mountain area. My thanks to Tom Chester and Tommy Stoughton for their help in identifying several samples. The photographs in this gallery were taken 4/23/13 and 4/25/13. The list of species for this segment of the PCT is here.
