MT. WILSON TRAIL TO MT.WILSON, SAN GABRIEL MOUNTAINS
SEPTEMBER 2008 PAGE ONE
Photographs by Michael Charters

It was great after the fires of April and a long dry summer to see so many things making a comeback. There were signs of green all along the burned section of the trail, and even in September many things in bloom. On this particular hike, I left very early in the morning and thanks to some recent conditioning hikes was able to make it all the way to Mt. Wilson and back, a distance of about 15 miles. Many of the things that do not normally bloom in September were not blooming beyond the burn area, and I surmise that the additional nutrients provided by the fire have extended their blooming season. One surprise was the fire follower Phacelia grandiflora which I had never seen on the trail before. It will be interesting to see what comes up next spring. An asterisk next to the common name indicates a non-native species.
