MT. BADEN-POWELL, SAN GABRIEL MOUNTAINS
JULY 2008

For all those of you who have perhaps like me been mispronouncing the name of the man for whom this mountain is named, I here append a little poem written by Lord Baden-Powell himself. I had been pronouncing it for years as BAH-den POW-ell, but the following demonstrates that this is incorrect. "Man, Nation, Maiden, Please call it Baden. Further, for Powell, Rhyme it with Noel." However, my understanding is that by geographical convention, names which have come to have an accepted local pronunciation apparently do not necessarily have to follow the original pronunciation of the names from which they are derived. I think that the most common pronunciation of the name of this mountain is BAY-den POW-ell, so that is what I am trying to make myself say. A few of the pictures shown here were taken on a brief preliminary walk on the Big Horn Mine trail, the trailhead for which is the same as for the Baden-Powell trail, and I have indicated them with an plus sign (+). An upside-down V next to the common name indicates a species that was new to me when I photographed it on this field trip.
