WONDERLAND WASH, JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK NOVEMBER 2017 PAGE ONE |
In late 2017 and based on reports that there had been some significant monsoonal rainfall in the Wonderland Wash area of Joshua Tree National Park in September, I accompanied Tom Chester, James Dillane, Walt Fidler and Mike Crouse on an uncommon late fall visit to investigate the flora there. This mostly unmaintained trail meanders across the sandy and rocky terrain through the aptly-called Wonderland of Rocks near Barker Dam. The trailhead is at the Barker Dam parking area. Enormous boulder stacks everywhere litter the landcape and provide a backdrop to the scenery that is absolutely magical. Needless to say that in the month of November, many plants were dormant. |
