ICEHOUSE CANYON, SAN GABRIEL MOUNTAINS

The trail to Icehouse Saddle begins at a parking area 1.5 miles beyond Baldy Village and can be done either as a straight out-and-back or as a loop. To do the loop, after passing a series of private cabins, you take the Chapman trail to the left which zig zags up over the mountain's rocky shoulders to Cedar Glen and finally to a junction with the main trail about 5 miles from the start. From there it's another half mile to Icehouse Saddle. Returning down the main trail, it is 4 miles back to the parking area. Icehouse Saddle is quite a trail junction, with trails going off in one direction to Timber Mt, Telegraph Peak and Baldy Notch, in another to Ontario Peak, in a third to Cucamonga Peak, and in a fourth down the Middle Fork Trail to Lytle Creek. I don't know any other place in the San Gabriels where you can take five different trails from a single location. Icehouse Saddle is a lovely shady place to have lunch before continuing in whatever direction you choose.
