CASTRO MOTORWAY, SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINS
APRIL 2009

Photographs by Michael Charters

This hike begins in the same parking area as the last one at the top of Corral Canyon Road, but instead of going down into Solstice Canyon progresses up a dirt road that traverses a ridge overlooking Malibu Creek State Park. It was windier and cloudier when I began but the sun soon came out and it became another beautiful day. Milt McAuley once showed me some interesting species along this road that are not too common in the Santa Monicas, such as Pickeringia montana, Hieracium argutum, Hemizonia minthornii, and Lotus argophyllus. The hawkweed was the only one I saw today but it wasn't in bloom. Some of the photos displayed here were taken in the burn areas along Corral Canyon Road which were affected by the Corral fire of November 2007 and are now covered with morning glory and large-flowered phacelia. I'm never sure how many species to include in any given photo gallery. Regular viewers may tire of seeing pictures of the same species, but people who want to know what's on a particular trail want to see everything that's there, so I have usually gone in that direction. An upside-down V next to the common name indicates a taxon that was new to me when I photographed it on this hike, and as always, an asterisk indicates a non-native.
