Latin name: Boechera retrofracta (Graham) Á. Löve & D. Löve X Unknown parent Pronunciation: BOO-ker-a ret-tro-FRAK-ta Common name: Mountain rock-cress Family: Brassicaceae (Mustard) Habitat: Occasional in open areas in the understory of pine forest in the upper elevations of San Bernardinos and San Jacintos Blooming period: May to July Name derivations: 1) Boechera 2) retrofracta NOTE: This is a taxon for which the taxonomy is still very much up in the air. The Jepson eflora still lists it but as a species of the high Sierras. I have photographed what has been identified first as Arabis holboellii var. pinetorum and then as Boechera pinetorum in many places in the upper reaches of the San Bernardinos and San Jacintos. It appears to be a taxon of hybrid origin and for the time being has been called Boechera retrofracta X Unknown parent. A lot of work needs to be done before a true binomial name is applied. Two analytical works by Tom Chester are online at http://tchester.org/sj/species/arabis_non_erect_fr/index.html and http://tchester.org/sj/species/arabis_non_erect_fr/index_old.html. |
