Latin name: Penstemon Xdubius (P. centranthifolius X P. grinnellii) Davidson (pro sp.) Pronunciation: PEN-ste-mon DOO-bee-us Common name: Doubtful penstemon Family: Plantaginaceae (Plantain) Habitat: Places where P. centranthifolius and P. grinnellii both live Blooming period: May to June (?) Name derivations: 1) Penstemon 2) dubius NOTE: The Jepson website as of May 2023 includes this taxon in its list of unresolved varieties, and says that it represents a possible addition as a named hybrid. This plant was photographed on the trail from Red Box toward Strawberry Peak in the San Gabriels, and both of the parent species were present in the immediate vicinity. 'Doubtful penstemon' is the name which I have given it. |
