Greene Pronunciation: las-THEE-nee-a GRAS-il-is Common name: Common goldfields Family: Asteraceae (Sunflower) Habitat: Many plant communities including coastal sage scrub, chaparral, valley grassland, creosote bush scrub and shadscale scrub below 4500', both cismontane and at the western edges of the Mojave desert, widespread in California Floristic Province Blooming period: February to June Name derivations: 1) Lasthenia 2) gracilis NOTE: The Jepson eflora says "Plants of Lasthenia californica ssp. californica and Lasthenia gracilis without pappus not distinguishable morphologically; molecular studies show them as separate and distinct taxa." However if a pappus is present they are clearly distinguishable.This is the most common goldfields species. |
